BanglaMM-Disaster: A Multimodal Transformer-Based Deep Learning Framework for Multiclass Disaster Classification in Bangla
Islam, Ariful, Hossen, Md Rifat, Arif, Md. Mahmudul, Noman, Abdullah Al, Rahman, Md Arifur
Natural disasters remain a major challenge for Bangladesh, so real-time monitoring and quick response systems are essential. In this study, we present BanglaMM-Disaster, an end-to-end deep learning-based multimodal framework for disaster classification in Bangla, using both textual and visual data from social media. We constructed a new dataset of 5,037 Bangla social media posts, each consisting of a caption and a corresponding image, annotated into one of nine disaster-related categories. The proposed model integrates transformer-based text encoders, including BanglaBERT, mBERT, and XLM-RoBERTa, with CNN backbones such as ResNet50, DenseNet169, and MobileNetV2, to process the two modalities. Using early fusion, the best model achieves 83.76% accuracy. This surpasses the best text-only baseline by 3.84% and the image-only baseline by 16.91%. Our analysis also shows reduced misclassification across all classes, with noticeable improvements for ambiguous examples. This work fills a key gap in Bangla multimodal disaster analysis and demonstrates the benefits of combining multiple data types for real-time disaster response in low-resource settings.

Obama WH physician says Biden doc should have performed cognitive test
The'Outnumbered' panel reacts to the House Oversight Committee's move to subpoena former President Joe Biden's doctor amid concerns about his mental fitness during his time in office. Former President Barack Obama's White House physician said in a new interview that former President Joe Biden's doctor should have performed a cognitive test to evaluate his fitness to serve in office. Obama's doctor, Jeffrey Kuhlman, told The Washington Post that Biden White House physician Kevin O'Connor should have performed a cognitive test during Biden's last year as president, given his age. O'Connor, who Kuhlman first appointed as Biden's doctor in 2009 when he was vice president, declared in a 2024 report that the then-81-year-old president "continues to be fit for duty." The report did not mention any neurocognitive testing.

DeepFreight: Integrating Deep Reinforcement Learning and Mixed Integer Programming for Multi-transfer Truck Freight Delivery
Chen, Jiayu, Umrawal, Abhishek K., Lan, Tian, Aggarwal, Vaneet
With the freight delivery demands and shipping costs increasing rapidly, intelligent control of fleets to enable efficient and cost-conscious solutions becomes an important problem. In this paper, we propose DeepFreight, a model-free deep-reinforcement-learning-based algorithm for multi-transfer freight delivery, which includes two closely-collaborative components: truck-dispatch and package-matching. Specifically, a deep multi-agent reinforcement learning framework called QMIX is leveraged to learn a dispatch policy, with which we can obtain the multi-step joint vehicle dispatch decisions for the fleet with respect to the delivery requests. Then an efficient multi-transfer matching algorithm is executed to assign the delivery requests to the trucks. Also, DeepFreight is integrated with a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming optimizer for further optimization. The evaluation results show that the proposed system is highly scalable and ensures a 100\% delivery success while maintaining low delivery-time and fuel consumption. The codes are available at https://github.com/LucasCJYSDL/DeepFreight.

Lightweight Data Fusion with Conjugate Mappings
Dean, Christopher L., Lee, Stephen J., Pacheco, Jason, Fisher, John W. III
We present an approach to data fusion that combines the interpretability of structured probabilistic graphical models with the flexibility of neural networks. The proposed method, lightweight data fusion (LDF), emphasizes posterior analysis over latent variables using two types of information: primary data, which are well-characterized but with limited availability, and auxiliary data, readily available but lacking a well-characterized statistical relationship to the latent quantity of interest. The lack of a forward model for the auxiliary data precludes the use of standard data fusion approaches, while the inability to acquire latent variable observations severely limits direct application of most supervised learning methods. LDF addresses these issues by utilizing neural networks as conjugate mappings of the auxiliary data: nonlinear transformations into sufficient statistics with respect to the latent variables. This facilitates efficient inference by preserving the conjugacy properties of the primary data and leads to compact representations of the latent variable posterior distributions. We demonstrate the LDF methodology on two challenging inference problems: (1) learning electrification rates in Rwanda from satellite imagery, high-level grid infrastructure, and other sources; and (2) inferring county-level homicide rates in the USA by integrating socio-economic data using a mixture model of multiple conjugate mappings.

Paedophile caught after police video trick lures him out of Dark Web
A paedophile has been jailed after authorities used a special video file to get him to unsuspectingly reveal his IP address. The paedophile, Roy Harvender Jr. from New Castle County, Delaware, had been using an anonymising network to access child sexual abuse images, but the video lured him into opening "an internet connection outside of the network software", allowing the FBI to track him down. The 59-year-old was a member of Website 19, a child pornography website on the'Dark Web', which was operational from 2012 to December 2014. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.
